What's the deal with the ribbons on my dancer's hands?

These serve two functions:

1. In Perform It, those hand ribbons signify when an individual player is dancing at peak performance (their multiplier is maxed out). If both players are dancing at peak performance, the venue will change behind them into an electric nightclub.
2. In Dance Battle, the ribbons signify which player is currently in the lead.
